Four generations of the Argo family have taken great pride in producing some of the finest breads, savouries, biscuits, and cakes in the historical harbour town of Stromness on the Orkney Islands for over 75 years.
Heritage

Born from a small back-shop bakery purchased by founder George in the 1940’s, which quickly became established as one of Stromness’s busiest and popular bakeries.

George's son Ian Argo and daughter in law Mabel purchased the business from him shortly before their marriage in 1959. The couples hard work and dedication to their trade, alongside the opportunity to maximize on the 'boom' period brought by the North Sea Oil discovery in the 1970s, evolved the bakery business which went from strength to strength.

Here, the blending of age-old skills of bakers and confectioners, a mix of traditional methods and tools, with the addition of newly developed ovens and modernised equipment, were fused together with over one hundred years of amalgamated history. This merge facilitated a bright, exciting, and expansive future for Argo’s Bakery and Orkney Fudge. More production space enabled the fourth generation the opportunity to develop a range of products suitable for export from the islands. The third generation offered their decades of knowledge and expertise and watched over as the Orkney brand evolved.

The third Argo generation Ian and Mabel’s daughter Grace and her husband Jimmy took over the running of the business in 2001. They brought with them the foresight to secure the future for the next generation, whilst continuing to grow and fulfil the wishes of their predecessors. In 2009 they seized the opportunity to move the bakery business from its historic home at Victoria Street, to a newly refurbished premise on the outskirts of town.

Today the fourth generation of the Argo Family, Grace's son Ewan and his wife Jenna continue to grow and develop the Argo bakery heritage. They are delighted to be able to offer a range of over thirty export items to an extensive consumer base. The Orkney Bakery Brand, an exceptional range, from a long-trusted line of experienced family bakers, brought to you from an extraordinary location.
